About This Episode
Author Junot Diaz immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic when he was seven years old. In 1996, he published his first book, Drown, a collection of short stories loosely based on his family's experiences which evoked the anguish, humor and general disorientation of the immigrant experience. The book received widespread acclaim and turned Diaz into a literary star at the age of 27. Earlier this month, Mr. Diaz was awarded a Pulitzer prize for his second book, "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," an unconventional novel which critics have variously called "funny," "heart-breaking," "unapologetic" and "intensely readable." Rafael Pi Roman spoke with Mr. Diaz about his novel, the process of self-discovery, and his life and work in general.
